Group Therapy
Group therapy has the power to affect the way we feel "in our bones" about ourselves (as well as others) in ways that are limited in individual treatment. By virtue of being in a room with others in similar (and somewhat different) circumstances, group members can gain perspectives and practice skills that lead to lasting changes.
I am passionate about groups and am a Certified Group Psychotherapist. I have led training groups for group therapists locally and nationally. I served as President of Group Solutions Network for two years and have co-chaired the Northeastern Society of Group Psychotherapy's Training Program, Breakfast Club, and Scholarship committees. I also have led process groups for mental health counseling graduate students at Boston University's School of Medicine.
My passion for group is largely fueled by my experiences as a group member and from the power I've seen group have in others as they've worked to change how they experience and live their lives. Group is strong medicine.
I currently lead six weekly interpersonal groups in my practice. I also co-lead an observed group with Julie Anderson, PhD, CGP at the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health.
The process of joining a group involves two individual meetings. These meetings offer the opportunity to better get to know each other, explore goals and expectations, go over group agreements, anticipate what might be hard for you in the group (and what you, the group, and I can do to support you), and address questions and/or concerns. It's also a chance to demystify group therapy - I try to paint a picture of what a typical group meeting might look and sound like. If you're interested in joining one of my groups, feel free to call (617-682-0057) or email (kriegjoel@gmail.com) me.
